The biggest marathons across the U.S. attract tens of thousands of participants, most of whom spend several hours running the 26.2 miles.
Believe it or not, that’s actually a great time to reach out to athletes using aerial advertising. There are no flight restrictions at marathons, making them a prime time to get up in the sky with your message and on the minds of athletes.
On the ground, attendees line the streets to cheer on the runners, waving banners and making plenty of noise. Good luck trying to get your message across with all of that going on.
With aerial media, however, you’re above all of that noise. Your message is all alone in the sky, ensuring you’re able to grasp runners’ attention as they make their way to the finish line.
It’s easy to design flight routes that parallel marathon routes, and runners have a positive reaction to aerial advertising. Many say it gives them something to focus on and helps take their mind off of the race itself.
Marathons are the best way to target athletes while they are participating in the race, but it’s possible to reach athletes through other sports platforms, too. People who are active — whether they exercise at the gym or play organized sports on the weekends — are usually the ones with the most enthusiasm for local sports teams.
In fact, they make up a large percentage of the crowd at most NFL games, and they certainly have disposable income. It’s not cheap to go to an NFL game. Ticket prices often exceed $200 per game, and that doesn’t even take into consideration parking and concessions.
Sporting events are a solid bet for any business to target when trying to reach out to athletes. Some companies, such as Nike and Reebok, have obvious connections to athletes, but that doesn’t mean other types of businesses shouldn’t tap into sporting events as well.
Just because marathon runner won’t be drinking alcohol during the race doesn’t mean a beer company should stay away. When you’re flying at a marathon, you also reach the spectators, and you want your company at the top of their minds, too.
To target athletes with aerial advertising, you must get in front of them. The best way to do that is to go where you know they are and deliver your message in a way that it won’t get drowned out by everything else going on. An airborne campaign can be much more cost-effective than traditional advertising, too.
